Installation instructions article 183 VR6 conversion to Golf 1

here you can read , how to install the VR6 engine  step by step,  in conjunction with the transmissions 02A, 02J in a VW Golf 1 / Caddy 14d / Scirocco Jetta 1 & 2 .

Here you can see the general positions at which the Epytec tuning adapters are mounted on the engine and gearbox

Important!!

Please do not press in the rubber mounts immediately, always mount the engine and gearbox mounts first and hang the engine with the gearbox in the body and align it as desired, then check how the bearings have to be pressed in so that there is no tension and everything fits properly. The background is that the bearings are eccentric and no body is the same, each has slightly different dimensions or some have already had an accident, etc. These differences can be perfectly compensated for by the eccentric bearings.

When it belongs to  bearings for the VR6 conversion, we unfortunately cannot recommend original rubber bearings, as they are simply too weak for the heavy engine and crumble after six months of driving at the latest. That's why we have included extra high-strength rubber bearings with a Shore hardness of 65-70 (much more stable than the originals) in our range for this purpose.
Despite the harder strength, these bearings have the same comfort as original bearings and are significantly softer than the hard PU bearings.
It is of course up to you which bearings you use, but we have done many long-distance tests with these bearings and they still hold up perfectly after all this time.

Clutch actuation Conversion of the clutch, here we have two different variants

Hydraulic clutch controls are installed in the new gearboxes, e.g. from the Golf 4. But since the Golf 1 has mechanical clutch cables, we have our bearing block set with a matching clutch cable.

With this conversion set, the conversion to a mechanical clutch is very simple.

Alternatively, you can also switch to the hydraulic clutch without having to change the pedals. We have developed a hydraulic clutch conversion kit for this purpose.
The huge advantage of our conversion set is that the original pedals from the VW Golf 1, Caddy 14D, Scirocco, etc. can be retained and do not have to be laboriously converted.
Furthermore, stepping on the clutch is much easier than if you convert to a cable.
In the matching accessories for this article, we also offer the matching slave and master cylinder.

To connect the different diameters of the water hoses of the heater (Golf 1 to VR6) we have developed a small adapter to make your life easier

Tipp!!

Varta has a C30 battery with 54 AH, which is extremely small. This then fits without any problems in the original position without changing anything.
This means that a large cooler, e.g. from the Passat 32B, 1.6 or 1.8 with an air conditioner with a width of 700mm, can also be used.

If necessary, I would leave this outside... it puts you off again... I think, how do you see it?

Topic TÜV registration:

If the TÜV acceptance is to be carried out, the following conditions apply:

Disc brake system front and rear from the G60/16V with brake booster, master brake cylinder and throttles, front disc internally ventilated with a diameter of 280 mm. Matching adapters + larger brake systems such as on Porsche can be found in our shop.

Matching adapter for the rear axle to G60

wishbone reinforced by welded sheet metal strips (click here

Wishbone struts at the front below and stabilizers at the front and rear are required

On the front axle must be installed springs with a correspondingly higher load  e.g. a screw -on chassis from Golf 1 with springs for Golf 3 VR6

The tires must have sufficient load capacity and the speed rating V.

Exhaust system from the Scirocco 16V with the cat. belonging to the VR6 engine. Loud "Group A" systems should be avoided, as the EURO 1 standard also stipulates noise emissions.

Air filter unit in a closed box, or a K&N air filter with a certificate for Golf 3 VR6 and a corresponding bracket.

The conversion should be done properly, which means that there are no cables, hoses or additional components lying around loosely in the engine compartment and over time scraping, tearing or falling off. In your own interest, cable connections should be made with a soldering iron and shrink tubing.

Tipps, that is often forgotten !!

  • Forgotten split pins on tie rod ends, brake lines or cables not attached or rubbing against moving parts
  • Servo hoses not fastened or grinding, no washers or self-locking nuts installed at the designated points
  • Rear wheel bearing play too large
  • Rubber boots on drive shafts or steering defective etc.

Important !!

Please check before acceptance! The TÜV carries out random AU inspections. If the examination is passed, your Golf 1 will be classified as EURO 1. It is advisable to bring a valid AU certificate carried out with the new engine. It is recognized and acceptance cannot fail due to a defect in the engine.
