Wilwood Braking Systems - Upgrade on the Chevrolet Camaro – 6-Piston Power for the Road

Introduction & Purpose of the Conversion

For a performance-optimized Chevrolet Camaro, our customer has chosen a massive brake upgrade with components from Wilwood. The goal was to noticeably improve braking performance without significantly altering the bodywork or wheel carriers. Special attention was given to a clean installation with street-legal components and optimal pedal feel – especially during sporty driving.

Wilwood offers a high-performance solution with the Forged Dynapro 6A caliper in conjunction with a 310x20 mm slotted disc. To perfectly adapt these components to the front axle of the Camaro, we developed a custom Epytec caliper adapter, tuned to the existing attachment points.

Technical Details of the Upgrade

At the center of the modification is the Wilwood Forged Dynapro 6A caliper with six pistons, known in the motorsport scene for its high rigidity and even pressure distribution.

A Wilwood 310x20 mm slotted brake rotor (OE No.: 160-7103-BK) was used. It is floating mounted on a Wilwood aluminum brake rotor hat with part number 170-0317, suitable for the 5x120 bolt pattern.

In combination with stainless steel braided lines provided by the customer, a direct, stable braking performance was achieved - ideal for sporty road use and occasional track day events.

Implementation: Customer Components & Prototype Construction at Epytec

🔧 The customer provided us with the original knuckle, Wilwood brake calipers, steel braided lines, as well as the brake discs and hats. Additionally, the customer had already made their own adapter prototype out of aluminum to test the desired positioning of the components.

Based on this prototype, we structurally optimized the adapter to compensate for manufacturing tolerances and increase long-term stability. Our final custom Epytec brake caliper adapter guarantees an exact positioning of the caliper to the friction ring surface. Through precise design, optimal disc coverage and piston positioning were achieved.

Installation & Assembly Process

The adapter installation was plug-and-play on the original axle mount of the Chevrolet Camaro.
As with all Epytec adapters, the following applies:

Original carrier is not modified
Adapter is delivered with high-strength screws (10.9)

Custom-Made Steel Braided Lines for Optimal Fit

For this project, custom-made steel braided lines were used, which the customer had already prepared in the correct length and with suitable fittings.

The use of steel braided lines not only increases durability but also ensures a consistent pedal feel, as the lines do not expand under pressure – ideal for sporty driving and maximum braking precision.

TÜV & Registration

The adaptations were designed in such a way that an individual approval according to §21 StVZO in conjunction with our material certificate (click here for the sample certificate) is possible. A TÜV presentation at TÜV SÜD in combination with a brake effectiveness test is usually easily implementable to register the brake system in your Camaro.

Question 1: How long does the Wilwood system last in everyday use?
With regular maintenance and the use of high-quality brake pads, the Wilwood system offers high durability – even with sporty driving. The combination of a 6-piston caliper and 310 mm disc ensures low thermal stress per piston, which increases the lifespan.

Question 2: Is TÜV approval easily possible?
With the supplied material certificate, individual approval according to §21 is generally feasible with TÜV SÜD. It is important that the brake is correctly installed and professionally bled.

Question 3: Can the conversion be reversed?
Yes, the installation is completely reversible. No original parts are damaged. The original calipers and discs can be reinstalled if necessary.

Question 4: What tools are needed for the conversion?
In addition to standard tools like a torque wrench, Allen keys, and a car jack, we recommend a brake bleeder and brake piston reset tool.
