Why does the brake pad not cover the entire friction surface of the brake disc during a brake conversion, and what influence does this have on the braking performance?

In a brake conversion with components from different vehicle models, the radial height of the brake pad and the width of the friction ring do not necessarily match. The pad geometry is determined by the caliper being used. Therefore, part of the friction surface of the brake disc may remain unused, even though the components are mounted according to the intended conversion combination.The percentage coverage of the brake disc alone is not a measure of braking performance. For the generated braking torque, in particular, the contact pressure of the brake pads, the coefficient of friction, and the effective friction radius are crucial. The effective friction radius describes the distance between the wheel axis and the point of application of the resulting frictional force.A larger effective friction radius generates higher braking torque with the same contact pressure and coefficient of friction. If the caliper is positioned further out by the adapter, this lever arm increases. For example, if the effective friction radius increases by 15%, the braking torque increases by 15% under otherwise identical conditions—even if the pad does not utilize the entire width of the friction ring. What matters is the actual position of the pad, not just the outer diameter of the brake disc.In contrast, the pad area influences, among other things, the surface pressure, thermal load, and wear. Depending on its design, a larger brake disc can also allow for higher heat capacity and better heat dissipation.An unused ring on the brake disc is therefore not a sign that something is wrong or of inferior braking performance. What matters is the designed combination, the correct position of the brake pad on the friction ring, as well as the hydraulic and thermal coordination of the entire brake system.

Why do we offer custom paint finishes exclusively in RAL colors?

RAL color tones are clearly defined and easily understandable for all parties involved. This allows misunderstandings in color selection to be avoided and the desired color tone to be reliably assigned.Individual manufacturer colors, special color tones or freely chosen color names cannot be fully covered due to the very large variety of colors. Therefore, custom paint jobs for all offered brake calipers and brake system kits are only possible with a clear RAL color number.

Which RAL colors can we not offer for the coating of our brake calipers?

We can paint your brake calipers in almost all common RAL colors. However, an exception is RAL fluorescent colors (neon/fluorescent colors) – we cannot offer these for brake caliper painting.The reason: fluorescent colors work technically different from normal RAL colors (they require special pigments/layer structures) and are significantly more sensitive in the "brake" application area. For a consistently clean, robust surface, we therefore rely on paint structures that have proven themselves in the brake area – and fluorescent RAL is excluded here.We do not offer these RAL fluorescent colors (examples)RAL 1026 Fluorescent YellowRAL 2005 Fluorescent OrangeRAL 2007 Fluorescent Light OrangeRAL 3024 Fluorescent RedRAL 3026 Fluorescent Light RedRAL 6038 Fluorescent GreenTip: If you want a "neon look," we often find a very similar non-fluorescent RAL alternative that is visually close and much more suitable for brake calipers.

Why does the drilling of the brake disc fixing not match the wheel hub when converting the brakes?

In brake system modifications, OE components from different vehicle models are often combined. Although all functionally relevant dimensions are coordinated, the position of the hole for the standard brake disc fixing screw may differ from the threaded hole in the wheel hub. This is design-related and not an indication of a wrong brake disc or a faulty fit—provided that the components specified in the product description are used.The fixing screw is solely used to temporarily hold the brake disc on the wheel hub with the wheel disassembled. It does not perform the centering or the force-fit fastening of the brake disc.The centering is done depending on the modification over the centering collar of the wheel hub or an included centering ring. When mounting the wheel, the brake disc is flat and force-fit clamped against the wheel hub flange together with the rim using the wheel bolts or wheel nuts.The standard fixing screw is not used in this case. Drilling or machining the brake disc or the wheel hub is neither required nor intended.

What torque should be used to tighten the sealing nipples on the brake caliper?

We recommend tightening the sealing nipples on the brake caliper with 20 Nm.Why is this important?The correct torque ensures a secure seal. A too loose fit can lead to leaks, whereas over-tightening can damage threads or components.Should a torque wrench be used?Yes, for precise and safe installation, we recommend using a torque wrench.Should anything be checked after installation?Yes, the sealing nipple should be checked for tight fit and sealing afterward.

My brake caliper is not exactly centered over the brake disc - what should I do?

If your brake caliper is not exactly centered over the brake disc, in most cases it is not a problem. Depending on the vehicle, model year, and mileage, axle tolerances can occur – and this even in newer vehicles.The most important thing is:👉 The brake caliper must have sufficient clearance on the left and right to the brake disc so that nothing rubs or permanently touches it.Many brake calipers also have locking bolts. It may happen that:there is very little clearance on one side or the bolt lightly toucheswhile on the other side there is more playThis is generally not critical.🔧 This is how you proceed:Install brake pads:First check if the brake pads can be inserted cleanly and without resistance on both sides.If everything fits:If installation is possible without problems, you can simply gently push back the locking bolts – this usually resolves the issue.If it jams:If the brake pads cannot be installed, or only with difficulty, on one side, action is required.In this case, you can:slightly shim the adapter with suitable bushings to adjust the brake caliperor – depending on the situation – slightly mill the adapter so that the brake caliper is correctly centered again👉 The goal is always that the brake caliper is evenly aligned with the brake disc and the brake pads are seated freely and cleanly.

The Porsche calipers are connected to the vehicle's hydraulic system and can therefore generate enormous braking force. However, as they do not have a parking brake function, the rear Audi S3 or Golf 4 R32 caliper is additionally used as a parking brake caliper adapter. The hydraulic connection is sealed with a blanking plug. This means that it serves only as a parking brake caliper.

The track width is increased by 15mm per side due to the spacers.

To improve ventilation of the brake system, we recommend removing the anchor plates/brake dust plates.

We cannot give you a general answer as to which rim size you can ride after your brake conversion. There are simply too many different rims. In rare cases, it can happen that the rims have minimal contact with the brake caliper, in which case you can simply use wheel spacers. >> Go directly to customised wheel spacers <<
The handbrake cable must always be used from the installed calliper, which means that the new handbrake cable may have to be adjusted slightly. For conversions in which the original calliper is still used and the original handbrake cable can be used, you may have to route it more directly to compensate for the larger disc diameter and longer travel
