Optimisation of the adapter
At Epytec, we focus on the continuous further development of our products - especially when we receive valuable feedback from the field. This was exactly the case with this project: a long-standing customer drew our attention to a problem that many drivers have with the VW Golf 1, Golf 2 and Golf 3 and the same model series - especially with lowered vehicles.
The brake caliper adapter originally offered for the combination of Porsche ZR17 brake calipers and Golf 4 R32 brake discs (334x32 mm) reached its limits in certain setups. The steering angle had to be limited in some cases, and the distance to the wishbone was critical when the car was lowered considerably.
We took this practical feedback as an opportunity to completely revise the adapter solution together with the customer. The aim was to develop an optimised version that does not require a steering lock limiter, fits securely even on lowered vehicles and at the same time enables maximum braking performance. New 3D models were created in five successive development stages until finally an offset adapter was created that utilises the installation space significantly better and no longer touches the wishbone.
In the following project report, we show you how we developed this adapter together with our customer.
Customer-based customisation with 5-fold optimisation
At the beginning, our customer sent us a self-made wooden sample of his desired brake caliper adapter - a clever solution to visualise the rough dimensions and installation conditions directly on the vehicle. Based on this sample, we designed the first CAD model and sent him a suitable 3D-printed plastic model to check the fit and installation space situation on the vehicle.
However, as is often the case with customised solutions, it only became apparent in detail where there was still a need for optimisation. A total of five revised 3D models were necessary until the adapter not only fitted perfectly mechanically, but also managed without any steering lock limiters and the necessary distance to the wishbone was guaranteed.
The final version impressed with its precise alignment, optimum fit and full freedom of movement - a truly customised product, the result of close collaboration with the customer and our development expertise.

Below we show you the final version of our optimised brake calliper adapter in its installed state. You can clearly see the offset design, which was specifically developed to maximise the distance to the wishbone - even when the vehicle is lowered considerably. The adapter sits perfectly on the original axle mount and ensures that the Porsche ZR17 brake callipers are precisely centred with the 334x32 mm Golf 4 R32 brake discs.
Thanks to the revised geometry, the need for a steering lock limiter has been completely eliminated. This means that the full steering behaviour is retained - without any loss of ride comfort or turning circle. Even with sporty low set-ups, there is no longer any contact between the brake calliper and suspension components.
