216 / 142 Installation Instructions VW Golf 1 Cabrio Caddy 14d Jetta on the G60 Brake System
Installation Guide: Brake Caliper Adapter for Conversion to G60 Brakes – Perfect Fit for Golf 1, Golf 1 Convertible, Caddy 14d, Jetta 1 & Scirocco
Introduction & Benefits:
The conversion to the G60 brake system offers an optimal solution for improved braking performance in older VW models such as the Golf 1 and its derivatives. By using the Epytec brake caliper adapter, the powerful 280-mm brake of the G60 model can be adopted, which not only increases safety but also enhances cost efficiency as existing components can be used. Another advantage is the reversibility, allowing the vehicle to be restored to its original condition if necessary.
Tools & Materials:
For the conversion, you will need the following tools and materials:
Ratchet with matching sockets (particularly 13mm and 15mm)
Torque wrench for precise tightening of bolts
Thread locker (e.g., medium strength Loctite 243)
Wire brush or sandpaper for cleaning contact surfaces
Rubber mallet for gently loosening stuck parts
Brake cleaner for cleaning the components
Catch container for any leaking brake fluid
Safety goggles and gloves for personal safety
Step-by-Step Guide:
1.Preparation:
Place the vehicle on a level surface and secure it against rolling. Lift the front axle and support the vehicle with jack stands. Remove the front wheels to gain access to the brake system.
2.Removal of the old brake system:
Loosen the mounting screws of the brake caliper with a 13mm socket and carefully remove the brake caliper from the steering knuckle. Hang the brake caliper with a suitable hook to avoid tension on the brake line. Then remove the brake caliper bracket by loosening the mounting screws with a 15mm socket. Remove the brake disc.
3.Checking the parallelism of the brake caliper mount:
Due to VW's manufacturing tolerances, the brake caliper mount must be checked for parallelism. An indication of unevenness is a visible air gap when the adapter is screwed to the steering knuckle with only one countersunk screw. If there is a gap on one side, the adapter does not sit flush.
4. Correction of parallelism:
If a gap is found during the parallelism check, a washer must be placed between adapter and brake caliper mount . Ideally, this is done at the lower mounting hole. This establishes the previously absent parallelism. Where the washer is used, a longer countersunk screw must be used. Alternatively, the brake caliper mount can be adjusted to the steering knuckle.
6. Installation of the new brake disc
Place the new 280-mm brake disc onto the wheel hub. Make sure the disc is clean and free of oil or grease. Secure the disc with a screw if necessary to prevent slipping.
7. Assembly of the G60 brake caliper bracket:
Attach the G60 brake caliper bracket to the Epytec adapter. Use thread locker here as well and tighten the screws to the torque specified by the manufacturer.
8. Assembly of the brake caliper:
Place the brake caliper on the brake caliper bracket and secure it with the appropriate screws. Ensure that the brake pads are correctly positioned and the brake line is not twisted.
9. Connection of the Brake Line:
Connect the brake line to the new brake caliper. Ensure that the connection is tight and no brake fluid is leaking.
10. Bleeding the Brake System:
After the conversion, the brake system must be bled to remove air from the system. Open the bleeder valve on the brake caliper and gently pump the brake until no more air bubbles escape. Make sure to keep an eye on the brake fluid level and refill if necessary.
11. Final Steps:
Check all screw connections for tightness and ensure that no components are loose. Mount the front wheels and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Lower the vehicle and conduct a careful test drive to assess the function of the brake system.
Error sources & Troubleshooting:
Grinding noises: If grinding noises occur after the conversion, check whether the brake caliper is centered over the brake disc. If necessary, shims must be used to adjust the spacing correctly.
Soft brake pedal: A spongy pedal feel indicates air in the system. Repeat the bleeding to ensure that there are no more air bubbles present.
Imbalance when braking: If vibrations occur, check whether the brake disc is mounted correctly and free of irregularities.
