Installation instructions: Rear axle offset plates - Optimum solution for VW Golf 3 GTI 8V with ABS and disc brakes
Introduction & Benefits:
If you have lowered your Golf 3 or are driving wider rims, this can cause problems with the axle geometry. Our axle offset plates (item number 205) provide an optimum solution for correcting the offset of the rear axle. This not only improves the look, but also the driving behaviour, especially with extreme lowering or air ride suspension. Cost efficiency results from the simple installation without special tools, and the conversion can be retrofitted at any time if necessary.

Tools & materials:
For the installation you need:
- one half-inch ratchet with 17 mm socket
- a 3/8-inch ratchet with 7 mm hexagon socket
- a medium extension, an impact wrench if necessary and a torque spanner, which you should set to 70 Nm.
Ideally, use medium-strength Loctite 243 to secure the screws.
You will also need a jack and jack stands or alternatively a lifting platform.
Step-by-step instructions:
Raise the rear of the vehicle and remove the wheels to take unnecessary weight off the axle. Secure the axle with a gearbox jack or car jack so that there is no tension on the brake lines.

After removal, you can keep the original screws - or, as in many cases, dispose of them directly. The new offset plates are supplied with a complete set of mounting materials: six 10.9 hexagon head bolts for the axle and six 7 hexagon socket head bolts for attaching the plates to the chassis.
Place the offset plates on the body and first tighten the hexagon socket screws hand-tight using the 3/8-inch ratchet. For screws that are difficult to reach, use a long extension to get through the hole in the axle.
Finally, tighten all screws evenly to 70 Nm - listen for the click of the torque spanner. Be sure to check all screws and retighten if necessary!

In this picture you can see the fully assembled Epytec offset plates (item 205) in installed condition - including installed rim and complete tyres. It is particularly easy to see how the offset plates move the rear axle exactly 15 mm to the rear and thus create more space in the wheel arch.
This has several advantages: Improved wheel clearance, a significantly more harmonious wheel centre position in the wheel arch - ideal for all those who drive extremely low or ride wide wheels.
This setup is optimised for an Airride suspension and prevents the wheel from hitting the sidewall at "zero pressure". The installation is complete, all screws are tightened to 70 Nm and secured with Loctite 243.

Sources of error & Troubleshooting:
If the screws are difficult to screw in, check the threads for rust or damage. If there are grinding noises after assembly: Check that all screws are correctly countersunk and that the axle is seated without tension. Be sure to deburr if the axle mount was damaged during removal!
Safety & liability:
Wear safety goggles when screwing! Always work on a safe surface. Do not use improvised lifting points. All work is carried out at your own risk. For road approval, we recommend approval by a test centre (TÜV/DEKRA).
FAQ for the installation instructions:
Question 1: Can I also install the offset plates on drum brakes?
Answer: No, these offset plates are specially designed for models with disc brakes on the rear axle. You will need a customised set for drum brakes.
Question
2: Do I have to remove the axle completely?
Answer: No, installation is possible without completely removing the axle. It is sufficient to relieve the axle and loosen the axle mount.
Question
3: Can I drive the offset plates in everyday life?
Answer: Yes, the plates are fully suitable for everyday use and designed for durability - ideal for Show & Shine and sporty road vehicles.
Question
4: Do the screws need to be fitted with threadlocker?
Answer: Yes, medium-strength Loctite 243 is recommended to prevent loosening due to vibration.
Question
5: Is registration required?
Answer: Yes, as the geometry of the axle changes, a TÜV registration is necessary. However, all Epytec products can be registered.
